Research specifically on this pattern shows stronger HRV effects than either faster or slower breathing.

How to actually use breathing exercises

Start before you need it. Breathing exercises work best when you begin at a moderate level of arousal, not when you're already at peak panic. A short exercise before something stressful starts is more effective than trying to breathe your way through the middle of it.
